The Safe Shopper's Bible - Must have for the healthy family.

Recently we have featured a number of books that present environmentally friendly options to everything from personal care, to home cleaning products, and frankly, I was pleasantly surprised to see how readily available this information is thanks to the efforts of some very dedicated authors. The fact is that we really have no excuse to opt for toxic products when there as so many healthy alternatives that work just as well.

With that in mind, I want to highly recommend another very important reference called The Shopper's Bible, A Consumer's Guide to Nontoxic Household Products, Cosmetics, and Food. This book reads like an encyclopedia of everyday household, personal care and food products, all organized by product type, and containing helpful evaluations on safety. It contains over 400 pages of great information for your family's safety.

Each listed product is rated on a set of criteria appropriate to the product, and within each category reviewed, the products are rated for risk, and then an indication as to whether they are recommended. Putting this information at your finger tips will make it easy to make good choices on the products and foods that you buy, and will definitely contribute to your wellness goals in a big way.

Be sure to pick up a copy of this very important reference tool. You'll be glad you did.

Two Great Books for the Environmentally Conscious Household.

Here are two great books both dealing with toxin free personal care and household cleaning products. Clean & Green, written by Annie Berthhold-Bond, provides 485 different formulas you can use to clean things around your house, and I highly recommend it. All of the formulas are simple, easy and inexpensive to put together, and should actually save you money at the same time as it protects your environment.

The Non-Toxic Home & Office is another gem that provides a wealth of information on everyday products we should avoid to promote wellness. These two resources should be in the library of any wellness conscious individual, and I hope you will pick them up.

Amazon has a fair number of these used, and in excellent condition, so be sure to check there, unless having a brand new copy is a requirement. Personally, I like to recycle, so I picked up my copies used, paid for both what I would have paid for one new, and saved a couple trees in the process too.

Aquasana Counter Top Water Filtration System.

The Aquasana Counter Top water filtration system, is one of the least expensive drinking water filtration systems in our line up, but that does not mean that it is short on performance. This system is both economical and effective.

The Aquasana Counter Top water filtration system has been tested and certified by the State of California to meet ANSI/NSF standards 42 and 53, which relate to color and odor, chlorine removal, and particular reduction (Standard 42), and the reduction of cysts, lead, volatile organic compounds and turbitity. But, Aquasana didn't stop there. Aquasana has put it's system through a testing procedure that is actually more stringent that ANSI/NSF standards require to demonstrate it's superior performance when compared to other certified filters.

Keeping your Home Clean and Safe.

Here are some tips on keeping your home clean using safe, inexpensive, and common substances from around your home. Be sure to try some of these simple suggestions, and let us know if they are effective for you.

Aqua Pure Shower Filtration System

Our first shower filtration system under review is the Aqua Pure Shower II water filtration system. This unit is made by the same company that produces the Aqua Pure Counter Top water filtration system, and as we would have expected, it is a very high quality unit.

The Aqua Pure Shower II water filtration system. , was easy to install, requiring only that you remove your existing shower head, and simply screw the unit into place. It features an omni-directional wand that can be placed on the filter's stand for hands free operation, and can also be removed to reach harder to reach areas. Either way, it was convenient and easy to use.

I was so happy with the functionality mentioned above that I actually forgot it's also got an adjustable massage feature, allowing you great flexibility in the water flow force, and type of flow.

On the shower unit, we peformed the chlorine test and it equaled the results of its drinking water counterpart, leaving no detectable levels of chlorine.

AquaPure Counter Top Water Purifier.

The Aqua Pure Counter Top water filtration system, is a drinking water filtration system that has been tested and certified by NSF International in ANSI/NSF standards 42 and 53, which relate to color and odor, chlorine removal, and particular reduction (Standard 42), and the reduction of cysts, lead, volatile organic compounds and turbitity. The unit was easy to install. We had it up and running, and producing filtered water in about 10 minutes. The system has stable base because it's wider at the bottom than the top, and has plenty of tubing to extend the location of the unit to a convenient spot around the sink. The diverter, the piece that allows you to switch between filtered and non-filtered water, was easy to attach, as the unit comes with a variety of fittings that would be found in most households.

This unit has a neat little battery powered "smart sensor" which lights up green when the filter is good, blinks yellow when the filter is getting close to needing replacement, and lights up red when the filter should be replaced. The unit operates without electricity, so you don't have to worry about locating it near an electrical outlet.

Water Filtration System Review Continued.

Before we evaluate the first filtration system in our lineup, here are some things you should do before making a purchase.

First, determine what contaminents may be in your water by visiting the Environmental Protection Agency web site, and checking your state and local jurisdiction. You may also want to request a report from your local water authority directly just to make sure the information is current. Depending on where you live in the country, you may find more or less need for a filter that will remove certain types of contaminents. For example, in 97% of the jurisdictions in the United States, water is disinfected using chlorine. Some water filtration units contain a combination of filtering systems, and ultra-violet treatment as well. UV systems are typically unnecessary in jurisdictions where the water is treated with chlorine, because UV doesn't kill anything that chlorine doesn't already take care of. However, if you have well water, or in areas where water treatment does not include chlorine disinfection, a UV capable system may add value to your filtration needs.

Once you have determined what is likely in your water, you can then begin to identify filtration systems that remove those things. Most quality filtration systems will do a good job of removing chlorine, and chlorine by-products, as well as heavy metals, bacteria, and cysts. Selecting a system that is certified by NSF to meet their standards helps to expedite your due diligence. The state of California also issues certifications that basically rely on satisfying NSF standards. Don't assume that because a filter is not "certified" by NSF that it does not meet the standards, because NSF charges a certification fee, which some manufacturers choose not to pay, even though their filtration systems meet or exceed NSF standards. But, in those cases, look for filtration systems that have at least been independently tested to meet NSF standards, especially if it has been tested by a state authority.

Water Filtration Test Drive.

Recently, many of you have asked us to recommend water purification systems for home and office use, and we hope that was stimulated by the focus we have been placing on proper hydration. Because of the importance of this topic, we have decided to perform a review of a number of different systems available in the market currently. We have arranged to conduct our own "test drive" of several systems (both water, and air purification), and we will report the results to you here on the Toxin Free Blog.

Our review will focus on ease of use, effectiveness of the device, overall cost of ownership, and special features. In addition to the written review and ongoing reports, we will interview each of the manufacturers and feature those interviews on Fitness Radio, our health and wellness radio show.

If you have had an experience with one of the products we feature, please feel free to provide us with feedback that we can share with the Choosefitness community. You can do so by submitting your information to feedback@choosefitness.com.
